It was a different kind of surf contest was held in Santa Cruz, CA last weekend, the Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational rewards surfers for getting back to the roots of longboarding.  The rules are simple: single fins only; the longboards must be over 9-foot-2 in length and weigh more than 12 pounds; and no leash plugs since leashes are not allowed.  It’s about style, power, grace, and creativity.  Cooperation is just as valuable as competition.  A $500 prize for the best shared wave, a $1000 prize for getting the most out of that perfect wave even if it means your board ending up on the rocks (that’s where the duct tape comes in!).

“The Duct Tape Invitational is special because it shows longboarding the way it should be,” said contest director and Vans team rider Tudor. “It also highlights some of my favorite young loggers, guys that represent the next generation of longboarding.”
