We were super stoked to catch up with Kim Thomas, founder of Paddle Monkeys, who has recently brought the first and only SUP rental-on-water in Galveston (G-Town)! Spending her summers living on or near Galveston Island (Tiki Island) most of her life, Kim has been active in water sports since she was a teenager. With Stand Up Paddling (SUP) currently being the fastest growing sport in the world (Texas is ranked 5th for SUP in the United States), she has been honing her Stand Up Paddleboarding skills and becoming active in the SUP community. Attending SUP races in Panama City, Destin, Pensacola and in Austin, TX, Kim has spent countless hours volunteering and/or sponsoring SUP events. She is also the leader of a Meetup.com SUP group of 45+ members. Kim was also a sponsor for the Inaugural Island Paddle Race at Waterman Restaurant on May 11, 2013.
After spending an entire day last summer looking for a rental board for a friend, Kim noticed a need in Galveston for a SUP rental location with easy on-site water access. Currently there are only two stand up paddleboard rental options on the island, and neither have water access on their premises. This is an important factor when renting a SUP because the boards are large and not easily transportable to an offsite body of water.
Fast forward to Spring, 2013. Kim has opened the first direct water access Stand Up Paddleboard rental business in/near Galveston Island, aka Paddle Monkeys. This will fill a need for tourists and residents of Galveston and surrounding areas that want to try out the Stand Up Paddling (SUP) as it has become fastest growing sport in the world! Make sure that you check out Paddle Monkeys for all your on the water SUP in Galveston, and we hope to see you out on the water in G-Town!
