During the last six years, the Surfrider South Texas Chapter and the City of South Padre Island with the support of Barefoot Wine & Bubbly and tons of community volunteers, worked to restore the Dunes at their beaches in South Padre Island, TX.
From Rob Nixon’s blog: The Surfrider Foundation South Texas Chapter has been partnering with the City of South Padre Island, Texas for the past 6 years in an effort to restore the Dunes on their beaches. In 2008, Barefoot Wine partnered with Surfrider Foundation to promote “barefoot friendly” beaches around the United States and the South Texas Chapter was a pick as a featured Chapter for the Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project recipient. That year we began our efforts to support the City of South Padre Island with Volunteers to achieve their goal of a protective Continuous Dune Line within the City Limits that would help protect the City’s infrastructure while providing a “sand savings account” to help the beach to recover after a storm event, preserve our Public Beaches and provide habitat for our local flora and fauna. Since that time, hundreds of Volunteers have donated thousands of hours to plant hundreds of thousands of Bitter Panicum and Sea Oats to grow and enhance our dunes. READ THE REST
