With the current Texas heat wave, one of the best ways to stay cool is to hop on a SUP in Texas and get in the water. For those who enjoy Stand Up Paddle (SUP), The Bastrop River Co. is bringing the first annual The SUP Cup on August 16-17, 2013. With the “historically hip” Bastrop being dubbed the fastest growing SUP destination in Texas, along with a festival and music from Bob Schneider, this should be a great weekend for landlocked surfers and SUP enthusiasts alike. The event will take place two days, include two races, and an obstacle challenge for those who wish to partake in the festivities along the Colorado River. Here is some video footage previewing the obstacle course, and below is the full schedule of events.

The Sprint Races are the perfect way to kick off an energetic exciting weekend of SUP competition.
Throw out all you think you know about river racing, SUP racing and paddling skill. This is about power
and raw speed… school yard style… who can get from here to there first. It’s anybody’s game.
Distance: Approx. 350 yds

Finish Line: Bastrop Brewhouse
10-20 paddlers per heat. Winners progress to next heat.

(Pub Crawl entry fee included with team registration)
SATURDAY, AUGUST 17
The Original Texas Down River SUP Race – “El Camino Real de SUP” (10 AM – 2 PM)
This 6 mile down river race is the perfect combination of competition and recreation. Whereas a seasoned SUPer will conquer this stretch in quick fashion, a recreational SUPer or weekend warrior will enjoy a new challenge and achievement. You’ll never run another 5K. The race is named after the El Camino Real paddling trail (one of the most popular kayaking trails in Texas and soon to be the most talked about SUP destinations in the U.S.) This 6 mile trail changes along the way from deep wide waters to shallow narrow passes. Big flat water and skinny little quick spots make this an ideal setting for a SUP race.
Distance: 6 miles
Start Line: Fisherman’s Park
Finish Line: The Colorado River Refuge
The Skills Course (3 PM – 7 PM)
We’ve tested raw power and stamina. Now let’s talk skill. The obstacles are designed such that anyone who’s ever SUPed is suited to attempt and likely complete the challenge, while a skilled paddler will use his bag of paddling tricks to maneuver the course aggressively and impressively. Set up on the river just below the Brewhouse, SUPers will take on the obstacles two at a time on two identical courses, racing one another and the clock. Throw in a couple hundred tubers and kayakers lining the river banks cheering & jeering the competitors while drinking cold beer under the Texas sun, and we’ve got one wild afternoon on the river. The Saturday afternoon obstacle course brings a whole new concept to the idea of river SUP racing.
Competitors will enter & exit the water from Fisherman’s Park.
Spectators will have access to tubes and kayaks anchored off along the river bank from which to watch the festivities.
Awards and BIG FINALE! (8 PM – 1 AM)
Winners will be recognized at the Bastrop Brewhouse River Stage for achievement and style over the course of the SUP Cup. Then the weekend will be capped off by one of Austin’s favorite singer song writers, Bob Schneider.
Shuttle services to local hotels will be provided.
